Last year the Department of Architecture received a grant from the Center for Innovation in Learning for course development under the Distributed Learning Initiative. The grant provided funding for the development of an interactive supplement to the survey of the History of Architecture (ARCH 3115 and ART 2385) course required for every student in the architecture degree programs and a core curriculum course, focusing on an exploration of architecture from Carolingian to early Gothic periods (ca. 800 to 1200 C.E.).

To further enrich the experience of the student with the interactive supplement, 3D models of three exemplar architectural works were created by students working on the project.
St. Denis Jason Carwile, a fourth year student in the architecture undergraduate program, used Autodesk's AutoCAD and 3D StudioMax on a PC to develop a three-dimensional model and renderings of the reconstruction of the church of the Monastery of Cluny (Cluny III, ca. 1149-1156 C.E.) after the work of Kenneth Conant, creating as well several virtual walk through animations of the church of Cluny III. Tom Corbett, fourth year undergraduate in architecture, Pankaj Mahajan, second year graduate in architecture, and Heideh Sobhi, thesis year undergraduate in architecture, used Bentley's Microstation on several PowerMacs to model and render the ideal monastery of St. Gall (ca. 825 C.E.) after the Walter Horn study, and the Royal Abbey of St. Denis (ca. 1122-1151 C.E.) after the work of Sumner Crosby at Yale University.
