Several high profile research projects in which the College has been involved might have resulted in different outcomes with the VELab and the CAVE. For example: the American Electric Power transmission line project’s controversy centered on the environmental impact on forest and the New River natural resources through which the proposed power line passed. Imagine being able to walk through the Jefferson National Forest or canoe down the New River and see any point in question not just as a still frame snap shot, but as a complete real-time experience of the views that would be impacted by the power line.

What is the CAVE™? |
And to be able to fly over the landscape to understand the entire scope of the project. Imagine being able to re-route the power line on the fly to see the difference between alternative solutions. The Department of Veterans affairs commissioned the College to develop a bathroom facility to replace and upgrade outdated facilities. Several full size mock-ups were made to test the facility at considerable cost. The advantage of being able to simulate the proposed design realistically and test it with actual users would enable the designers to meet user needs and preferences in a more humane way than is possible with present technology. Also the CAVE would have allowed the manufacturer to iron out fabrication problems before costly full-scale prototypes were made. |
