Michael O'Brien is an Associate Professor in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture in 1975 and Bachelor of Architecture in 1976 from North Dakota State University and Master of Architecture in 1982 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He has been a licensed architect since 1981. After ten years of professional practice, Mr. O'Brien joined the faculty at Virginia Tech. and teaches courses in design, materials and methods of construction, affordable housing, and has completed sponsored research programs in affordable housing and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design. Current areas of interest include the development of interactive simulation environments for the assessment of building envelope assembly performance, development of sensor deployment strategies for maintenance - targeting sensors in building envelopes, shading devices for building envelopes, developing design / performance integration tools for primary building systems, and the development of adaptation methods for surplus shipping containers as emergency housing and single resident occupancy - transitional living center prototypes. Mr. O'Brien is currently a member of the board of the Architecture Research Centers Consortium (ARCC).
