Dr. Jim Jones is an Assistant Professor in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1981, Master of Architecture in 1983, and Ph.D. in 1995, all from the University of Michigan. Dr. Jones has over fifteen years experience conducting research in the areas of Energy Efficiency, Architectural Systems Integration, Indoor Air Quality, and Thermal Comfort. Recent areas of inquiry include the analysis of emerging technologies and concepts such as thermal comfort sensors, thermal storage and cold air distribution systems, atrium design and double glass envelope systems. His knowledge of various research methodologies includes the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for determining the temperature and air flow distribution in spaces. Using programs such as VENT or FLUENT the thermal behavior of spaces can be visualized. Results from these analyses are used both for research and for teaching.
