The VE
Lab is housed in the College's new Research & Demonstration Facility, which provides access to undergraduate/graduate studio space and research facilities not commonly available at other institutions. The VE Lab contains a Projection wall, Flock of Birds tracking system, Audio Display and Sonification system. These essential tools are driven by the College's recently acquired SGI Octane computer workstation and supported by a DEC Alpha file server and several PC NT workstations configured with an array of graphics tools such as Microstation, AutoCAD, 3D Studio, and Lightscape. The various lab machines are also configured with appropriate software development tools to create new tools for visualization and simulation.

What is the CAVE™? |
While many
schools of architecture and planning have computer facilities, these
facilities (including our present CAD labs) are used almost exclusively
for graduate and undergraduate instruction and design work. Of the few
programs that offer Masters of Science and Doctoral programs, none have
the unique combination of resources that we have, a new building dedicated
to research and an associated Virtual Environments Lab that can be used
primarily for research. The VE Lab is also a satellite research laboratory to support the CAVE™ at Virginia Tech. Professor
Dennis Jones and other faculty within the College and their students
already do computer animations with 3D Studio, Microstation and Lightscape
and develop multimedia and three dimensional computer graphics software.
The VE Lab provides a
private setting for the researcher to develop next generation computer
applications and to test their efficacy. The VE Lab provides a networked
environment of high-end graphics workstations. The lab is a multi-platform
computing environment configured with PCs, MACs, DEC Alpha and SGI Octane
workstations. The centerpiece of the lab is a stereoscopic a large format
hi-resolution projection wall, that employs an Electrohome Marquis 8500
projector. We also have an array of input and output peripherals ranging
from scanners and color printers to video production and CD mastering
capabilities. |
