Help us reach our goal of 25,000 light bulbs within the town of Blacksburg!
2,000 bulbs to date distributed by MakeTheSwitch
Help us make a difference one bulb at a time!
Who are we?
- The student interior design organization on Virginia Tech's campus, IDEAS: Interior Designers for Education and Sustainability.
What are trying to accomplish?
- We are switching incandescent light bulbs with compact flourescent bulbs.
- It is our goal to find ways of conserving energy that will help us move toward a more sustainable way of life.
When?
- Now... it is never too late to switch out your light bulbs.
Where?
- Starting with Virginia Tech's campus and the Town of Blacksburg, targeting dorm rooms and college apartments to the residents of the Town of Blacksburg.
Why should you spend the extra money on compact fluorescents?
- Though the up-front costs of fluorescent bulbs may be greater, spending the extra dollars now will actually save you much more money in the long run. Compact fluorescents may cost more than incandescents, but they last longer, meaning you would need to purchase them less frequently.
- The cost of your monthly energy bill will go down, as the new bulbs require less energy.
- Make the Switch at Virginia Tech is a project that we have developed in hopes of beginning to make our town a more energy-efficient environment.
- Though this is a simple task on the part of the individual, its effectiveness is dependent upon everyone’s cooperation. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, switching to compact fluorescent bulbs can save up to75 percent of the energy used by incandescent bulbs
How are we going to accomplish this?
- Simple. Just switch your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. . If everyone on the Virginia Tech campus and in the community of Blacksburg switched to the energy-saving fluorescent bulbs, then think how much energy it would save!
Ultimately....
We hope that this project will raise an awareness in people about the importance of energy conservation.
This project was motivated by a competition hosted by GE and MTV.
*Please note that on the IDEAS brochure, it says a 20 watt compact fluorescent bulb is compatible to a 60 watt incandescent. Normally, a 60 watt incandescent is compatible to a 15 watt compact fluorescent. We had a few concerns about the brightness not being the same, so we stepped up the wattage to the next level in order to counterbalance the difference in brightness. If a 20 watt is too bright for you, try using a lower wattage bulb, such as a 15 or 18 watt.
