Dean's Welcome
FROM THE DESK OF DEAN JACK DAVIS
Thank you for visiting this website. As the College of Architecture and Urban Studies approaches its fifth decade, we are pleased to offer a balance of time-honored educational traditions and leading-edge theories and practices. Our educational philosophy has as its highest priority student-focused learning supported with knowledge gained through current research and discovery. Our new students quickly assimilate into a thriving community of faculty and colleagues, and together they share the challenges and opportunities presented by everything from local outreach to global leadership. Many of our students enjoy an extraordinary advantage through our education abroad opportunities in a variety of locations on multiple continents.
Our schools of architecture and design, visual arts, construction, and public and international affairs are among the most relevant to global society today. Research conducted by the college's Metropolitan Institute reveals that the United States will experience a significant building boom due primarily to an estimated population growth rate that is expected to exceed even China's over the next 40 years. More than 70 billion square feet of existing nonresidential space will be replaced, 100 billion square feet of new space will be built, and 35 million new housing units will be needed.
It was competition that helped you get here, but it's collaboration that will help you succeed.
Our college is designing the future. Fundamental to our educational programs is the growing demand for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability that is critical for our survival. In short, our programs are committed to the advancement and sustenance of cultural enrichment and quality of life.
