Greetings, VT CAUS family!

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this issue of CAUS+effect – the online alumni newsletter for the College of Architecture and Urban Studies – as your new dean.

Since arriving at Virginia Tech in October, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting many of you and hearing your views on the future of our college. I look forward to holding more important conversations with you in the months ahead.

It’s a great honor to lead a college nationally renowned for architecture, construction, art, design, and policy, and a profound legacy of service to its communities through these disciplines. The stories in this newsletter highlight just a few recent examples of how the people of CAUS are making a difference in the world. In this issue, you’ll meet an industrial design alumnus who is an MTV Video Music Award-winning director, learn how Lucy (and Olivio) Ferrari continue to enrich our college, and find out why demand for our construction students is booming. You’ll also get an update on the top news from all four of our schools and my activities as your new dean.

Together, we’re entering an exciting era of change and revolution in higher education. Our social, political, technological, economic, and physical environments are rapidly transforming. Universities have to adapt accordingly to educate our students for the jobs of the future and serve the needs of a changing society and planet.

Your voice and engagement is critical to the path forward. I encourage you to participate – by whatever means you can – in discussions of our college’s future. Please join me for a Meet the Dean or alumni networking event in your city (keep an eye on our college Events Calendar for upcoming dates), at Reunion 2018 here in Blacksburg, or feel free to share your thoughts via email at vtcausdean@vt.edu. And please keep an eye on the newly redesigned caus.vt.edu website, as well as our Dean’s Hang Outs page, and follow VTCAUS on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter to get the latest news.

As an alumnus, you are one of the best measures of our success – and the greatest indicator of what a Virginia Tech College of Architecture and Urban Studies education means. I look forward to working with you to highlight your experience, enhance the value of your degree, and make your engagement with our college an enduring source of pride in your life.

Thanks and best regards,

Richard
